Zidane: “The two goals they scored were a joke”

Zinedine Zidane addressed the media in his post-match press conference after his side drew 2-2 against Club Brugge at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid went 0-2 behind in the first half but bounced back in the second to rescue a share of spoils with goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro.

Here’s what the boss had to say…

“The truth is that we produced a poor first-half display, we made a really bad start in the first five minutes and they made lift difficult for us straightaway. We weren’t in control of any aspect of the game and the second half was a different story and we changed the complexion of the game. What I take away with me is the reaction from the players because they’re the ones who changed the game. That’s what I take away with me, that and the point.

“The opposition can make life difficult for you. We knew all about the three quick players they had up top, but the problem is that when they score, that gives them a boost. It was the first time that they’d played here and they were charging around from corner to corner and up and down. In football, you’ve got to be focused from the first whistle and we didn’t get off to a good start. In the second half everything changed, we showed some heart, commitment and played in the opposition’s half. I don’t think that Vormer’s dismissal changed things, I don’t know how long they played with 10 men for, it was eight or 10 minutes, no more than that.

“I’m not worried. We know we have to make and finish chances because in the first 10 minutes, if we had been a little more clinical, we could have had the opening goal. We need to do that at home, go to kill the game from minute one and push our rivals. I don’t want to speak ill of a rival, but if we pressed like we did in the second half, they would have had no chance.”

“The two goals that they scored were a joke, that’s all I can say on that. What happened in the first half can happen to you. We know that this is the Champions League, we looked to take the three points from start to finish and that was impossible in the first half. We won the second half 2-0 and we end up taking a point.”

“Courtois is in a bad way and could not continue for the second half. He is the Real Madrid goalkeeper, along with Areola. Everyone has their own opinion and I’m not going to get into it. We have to be prepared as we were in the last three games. I’m not worried. Courtois wants to do his best and that’s what it’s all about. The second half was better and that’s what I take away with me. In the first half, we could point the finger at Courtois, but we’re all in it together, and I am the first to take criticism. That’s how it is and I am responsible.”

“Fortunately we reacted well and we can take that as a positive. It’s a game of two halves, and at half-time I said to the players: if we go on like this we will lose the game, but we have 45 minutes to change that, and the players did change it.”

“James and Bale both picked up knocks earlier this week. Everyone here is key to our success. I have 25 players and I need all of them, but those two were injured and I could not risk them. Today Nacho got injured too. Courtois was not injured quite as badly, we’ll have to wait and see with the others.”
