Mariano Diaz had a really good season for Olympique Lyon back in 2017/2018, scoring 21 goals while also providing 6 assists for his teammates. In the summer of 2018 he joined Real Madrid for the second time, hoping to continue scoring goals. Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned and the 26-year-old suffered several injuries. After scoring only 4 goals last season, Mariano’s future is certainly unclear.
According to reports, the Dominican could move back to France to play for AS Monaco. The Ligue 1 side had made an offer with an even higher salary to his current one and of course offering him much more time on the field. Not playing any pre-season game in America, Mariano’s future seemed to be clear. But while getting his first 40 minutes this pre-season against Tottenham and Fenerbahçe, the striker showed his worth and effort, hitting the shot that led to a goal from a rebound by Nacho and scoring his own first goal in pre-season.
If ‘Zizou’ continues to play a 4-4-2 formation with two strikers up front, there is a possibility for Mariano to fight for the spot beside Karim Benzema. Mariano is the only striker, along with Benzema, to score during Real Madrid’s preseason tour while Luka Jovic had suffered an ankle injury which saw him sidelined for some time. Putting much pressure on defense and being hard to get off the ball, the Dominican has his own abilities to course trouble for any opponent.
“We’ll see what happens when we get back to Madrid”, Zidane said during his post-match press conference on Wednesday, leaving big question marks. There are many possible scenarios which could happen until August 31.
