Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos spoke after Real Madrid drew 1-1 their first home game of the season. The French defender felt that Los Blancos deserved a better result and were the better side.

“I thought we played really well, we deserved a different result but we will keep working to improve. We could’ve scored earlier in the game, but we left it a bit late. It’s a shame, but we’re going to continue working.”

Real Madrid had plenty of chances to score, especially in the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Varane, however, pointed out the positive things and insisted that they will keep working hard to achieve their objectives.

“We struggled to go ahead. We’ve shown positive signs and that is the most important thing. The forwards have done very well, they just needed a bit of luck and precision in the final product. Things go quickly in football, it’s a good group, we’re focused on our objective and we have to keep going.”

James Rodriguez returned to the team and made his first appearance for Real Madrid in over two years, Varane praised the Colombian’s performance.

“He was very good in the first half.” concluded the Frenchman.

Sergio Ramos also spoke in the mixed zone in the aftermath of the match, the captain believes the team deserved more and admitted that the result hurts, as it was the first clash of the season in front of the home fans.

“It was a bittersweet day. We showed real intensity in the first half, and had chances to score goals, but we were unlucky today. After pushing ourselves in the first half we eased off and created fewer chances. We dropped the three points, which would have been really positive.

“1-1 is a real shame. It hurts because it was the first game in front of the home crowd and we wanted to give them a win. We owe them and we’ll win next time. We need to keep working, learn how to defend when we are leading.”

Zinedine Zidane’s men started the season well against Celta Vigo last weekend and things were looking better, but following tonight’s draw, the pressure is back on again.

“Real Madrid want to win. We try to leave everything else off the pitch. The pressure is on a bit more after last season, as things did not go well. You want to excite the fans, they really depend on this and will be going home deflated today.”

Real Madrid continues to be linked to Neymar and other players on the market, Ramos believes it’s disrespectful to speak about players who are not at the club and made it clear that there is quality in the squad. Although he admitted that he considers Neymar as one of the top three players in the world.

“Speaking about players who are not here is disrespectful to the squad. If it wasn’t for today’s result, this question about Neymar would not have been asked. We’re happy with the players we can compete with any team. “Neymar is a top player, among the top three in the world.”

The goalkeeping situation is still a topic of debate, and while Keylor Navas is rumoured to have submitted a transfer request and is on his way out of the club, Ramos spoke highly of the Costa Rican shot-stopper.

“He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world. The debate about the goalkeeper’s spot has always existed, but Madrid must have two big goalkeepers and I think we have them with Courtois and Keylor. I know it is a difficult situation for the coach and the goalkeepers. Competition is necessary and Real Madrid have to have the best.” stated the captain.
