Real Madrid missed a great chance to go to the top of La Liga after they were halted by Real Betis at the Bernabéu for a 0-0 draw. The game was not a dull affair but Los Blancos just could not unlock the Betis defense on a frustrating night.
Real Madrid: Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Rodrygo, Benzema, Hazard.
Real Betis: Robles; Mandi, Feddal, Sidnei; Emerson, Guardado, Bartra Moreno; Fekir, Canales; Loren.
As it Happened
Zidane replaced Valverde with Modric in Madrid’s starting line-up and Mendy came in for Marcelo after waiting for a long time on the sidelines. These were Madrid’s only two changes from their last two games. On the other hand, Rubi started with a 3-4-3 formation to put some extra cover to his defense.
Real Madrid started the game on a stronger foot with the domination of possession and very effective pressing in the final third. Madrid were denied a goal after Hazard was guilty of being offside before he made a great solo run and a great finish from a tight angle.
Betis grew into the game after the 25th minute and gave some serious scares to Real Madrid as Fekir and Canales looked more comfortable with time. Madrid came close to scoring again in the closing minutes of the half but Robles brilliantly kept Ramos at bay from a point-blank range.
Real Madrid tried their best to create chances in the second half but Los Blancos couldn’t score against the worst defense of La Liga 2019-20. Rubi’s approach of fielding six defenders paid dividends as Betis left the Bernebéu without a loss for the third straight year.
Jovic and Vinicius Jr. were the only two substitutes used by Madrid. Vinicius came close to scoring but was shut out by a brilliant Robles.
This wasn’t necessarily a bad performance from Real Madrid but it was more of a case where Betis were outstanding in defense. Eden Hazard was the best Madrid player on the pitch today. Mendy was defensively okay but his offensive play needs to improve. He also missed a crucial one on one chance against the goalkeeper. Real Madrid are tied for points with Barcelona at the moment but only time will tell if these point losses at home will hurt them in the long run or not.
Man of the Match
For his seven saves that won a point for Betis, we are featuring Robles as our man of the match.
