As if Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu wasn’t already one of the most magnificent stadiums in the world, the plans which are in place, could make it even more impressive.
MARCA state that as well as the retractable roof, the club also intends on installing retractable grass, enabling it to be removed within minutes. The key to this will be the installation of a number of plates, which will retract into a ‘green house’ of some sort, and the grass would remain in flawless condition, due to the combination of humidity and light, keeping the pitch underground without any issues.
The current pitch requires lifting and replacing every pre-season, but the new features will keep the grass in a healthy condition for a longer period of time.
It’s a plan which has been in the mind of Florentino Perez for a while, and once complete, the new Bernabeu will be able to host events of varying types. The club also anticipates the introduction of the new facilities will unlock the largest revenue stream, because it allows the stadium to be open for upwards of 300 days throughout the calendar.
Perez continues to enhance his legacy at the club, and no doubt this latest project of his will put the club in a very healthy financial state for decades to come, both on and off the pitch.
