Pre-season 2019-20 is about to be over. Real Madrid have travelled to Rome to face AS Roma in their final friendly match of the pre-season. After this, there is no room for mistakes. Roma are unbeaten in their last five fixtures. Real Madrid have won only two of their last five but the two wins came in their last two games. Madrid come into this game in better shape and morale than what they had two weeks ago.
Zidane has named a 20-man squad for the trip to Rome. Former Tottenham duo Luka Modric and Gareth Bale have returned to the squad but the Welshman’s future at Real Madrid remains unresolved. Mariano and James Rodriguez have been over looked again. Kubo and Rodrygo were not called up either as they stay involved with Castilla for the time being. Third choice goalkeeper Lunin has also missed out. Captain Sergio Ramos misses this game due to injury.
What To Expect
Zidane’s 3-5-2 formation was lauded by many for the defensive solidity it provided to the team. Real Madrid’s fragile defence can obviously benefit from such a scheme from time to time. But tonight, Zidane might go back to his preferred 4-3-3 as Modric, Kroos, and Casemiro are all available for selection. Tonight’s starting line-up may point towards significant selection strategies for Real Madrid’s La Liga opener.
Luka Jovic is a player who needs game time before getting down to the real business. Zidane would also be eager to monitor the excellent cohesion that has developed between Benzema and Hazard. Eden Hazard got his first goal for Real Madrid in the previous game against Salzburg and he will be eager to build on that form. Dani Carvajal had a tough game against Salzburg which may lead to Zidane starting Odriozola in place of Carvajal to begin with. Due to the absence of Ramos, Eder Militao could get a chance in this game as he demonstrated his abilities quite well on his debut.
Predicted Starting Line-up
Courtois, Odriozola, Varane, Militao, Marcelo, Modric, Casemiro, Kroos, Hazard, Benzema, Jovic.
Where To Watch
Real Madrid TV will broadcast the game live.
