Real Madrid have confirmed Mariano Diaz has tested positive for Covid-19.
A statement on the club’s official website read:
“After the COVID-19 tests carried out yesterday on our first team footballers by the Real Madrid Medical Services, our player Mariano, tested positive. The player is in perfect health and is complying with the protocol of isolation at home.”
The result has raised doubts about the striker’s involvement in Madrid’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Manchester City on August 7th.
Mariano, who scored the second goal in Real’s 2-0 win against Barcelona before the global lockdown, was a long shot to face the Premier League side, and is now in quarantine away from his teammates.
Head coach Zinedine Zidane will be able to call upon every player for that contest, other than captain Sergio Ramos who is suspended, and now, Mariano has become a doubt.
