Clubs will be pleased that national team duty is over for five months, as managers and head coaches around the planet will be welcoming their players back to training, in preparation for this weekend’s clashes, and Zinedine Zidane is no different.
Serbia 5-0 Russia
Real Madrid’s €60 million man finally showed what he was capable of, and looked in terrific shape as the Serbians hammered Russia on home soil. Jovic scored two superb headers, showing the movement and intelligence which has been lacking in his cameo opportunities for Madrid. And the 22-year old also assisted for Serbia’s third, his powerful drive on target fell for a tap-in for Dušan Vlahović.
Overall, Jovic had four shots on target, five completed dribbles and two key passes, and looked back to his best in aerial duels too, winning three out of four of them. His sharpness really came to the fore, and how comfortable he is in a two-man striker formation, something which Zidane may want to experiment with soon, considering he now has Jovic back in form.
It was certainly a successful international break for Jovic though, he ended it with three goals and two assists from three games, including two starts. Over to you, Zidane.
Belgium 4-2 Denmark
Thibaut Courtois on the other hand will want to put this performance well behind him, as he returns to Madrid. The Belgian keeper scored an embarrassing own-goal to let the Danes back in the contest at 3-2.
Madrid’s number one tried to cushion Nacer Chadli’s back-pass, but instead let it roll underneath his foot into the back of his own net. Romelu Lukaku scored a decisive brace for Roberto Martinez’ side, with the striker seemingly in red hot form ahead of Real’s clash with Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League in exactly a week.
